Neem Oil: The Plant Parent's Secret Weapon

Neem Oil: The Plant Parent's Secret Weapon

If there's one product every plant owner should have in their cabinet, it's neem oil.

It sounds intense but it's actually pretty gentle. Neem oil is a natural oil pressed from the seeds of the neem tree. It's been used for centuries in various cultures as a pest deterrent and plant protector.

What it does: It disrupts the life cycle of soft-bodied insects like spider mites, mealybugs, aphids, and whiteflies. It doesn't kill instantly but it stops them from reproducing. Used consistently, it clears infestations and keeps new ones from starting.

How to use it: Mix a small amount with water and a drop of dish soap to help it emulsify. A common starting ratio is about one to two teaspoons per quart of water, but follow the product instructions on whatever brand you buy. Spray the whole plant, top and bottom of every leaf, once a week for two to three weeks during an active problem, then monthly as prevention.

When to use it: Preventively, once a month. When you first spot a pest problem. After bringing a new plant home, as a precaution.

One thing to note: don't apply it in direct sunlight. It can cause leaf burn. Treat in the morning or evening when light is soft.

A little bottle goes a long way. It's one of the smartest five-dollar investments you can make for your plants.
